Often when we are in a romantic relationship, we tend to give away our whole being to that one person, without thinking about what we might lose on our way. According to studies, couples who had maintained friendships outside their relationship were happier. Taking up hobbies that doesn’t involve your partner also leads to mutual happiness. You need space from each other, every once in a while.

According to Dr. Coontz, excessive togetherness is not necessarily good for couples. The way to strengthen a relationship, she argues, is to put fewer emotional demands on each other. The happiest couples, she says, are those who have interests and support beyond just the two of them.
