Republic Day used to be something different when we were kids. We bring you 13 memories that might bring you a sense of nostalgia.
1. The special assembly at school.
A day or two before 26th January, schools used to be well-decorated in tri-colors. And everyone used to prepare for the assembly.

6. Lighting at the Rashtrapati Bhavan.

Our President's house looks gorgeous when completely lit. Sometimes, we'd make special rounds to see it in the evening.

7. Watching the parade with family.

Watching the Republic Day parade with family was a tradition. And an analysis of the parade over lunch was a must later!

10. Going to the terrace to see the flypast.

As children, we all wished the helicopters would pass from above our homes. In fact, we often ran to the terrace to spot them.

12. The first public holiday of the year.

It was almost a bad omen if 26th January landed on a weekend. If it was on a Monday or Friday, it was the greatest news ever.

13. Recalling memories of Republic Day.

The elders in the family would recall their share of memories as children. The most common I've heard include the entire parade coming on the radio and a couple of things from Indira Gandhi's speech.
